Consortium Biofertilizers – A Quick Guide

Consortium bio-fertilizers are basically a combination of two or more essential fertilizer. It mainly includes Rhizobium, Azospirillum, Azotobacterial, Phosphobacteria, and Potash Solubilizing Rhizobium. It improves crop availability of nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus.

Benefits of Consortium bio-fertilizer

· The use of liquid consortiums improves crop availability of phosphorus (20 to 25 kg per acre), nitrogen (25 to 30 kg per hectare), and potash (10 to 15 kg per hectare).

· It provides a 10% to 20% yield improvement.

· It can save up to 50 to 60 kg of urea, 40 to 50 kg of DAP, and 15 to 25 kg of MOP per hectare.

Methods of Application

Here are some of the methods of application of consortium bio-fertilizer:

Seed Treatment

· Prepare a solution of 250 ml liquid bio-fertilizer in 2-3 liters of water.

· Properly mix this solution gently with 50-60 kg of seed by hand, ensuring that a uniform layer is formed on all of the seeds.

· Sow the seed as soon as it has dried in the shade.

Root Treatment

· This method is beneficial for transplanting crops.

· Prepare a solution of 250 ml liquid bio-fertilizer in 4-5 liters of water.

· Before planting, soak the seeds in this solution for 20-30 minutes.

· Plant treated seeds as soon as possible.

Soil Treatment

· A 1-acre area requires 300-400 ml of liquid bio-fertilizer.

· Combine 50-100 kg of soil/compost/sand with 300-400ml liquid biofertilizer.

· Distribute this mixer evenly on the farm before the final ploughing or within 24 hours of sowing.

Precautions

· Keep liquid biofertilizer out of direct sunlight and in a cool place.

· Use the advised liquid biofertilizer for the special crop.

· Keep a safe distance from chemical fertilizer and pesticides, and avoid using along with them.
